Does Granite Emit Radon? Here’s What I See in Reality

I have had more than one customer walk into RBG with a handheld radon detector and hold it up against a slab before they’ll commit to buying it.

I don’t blame them.

If you Google “granite radon,” you’ll find no shortage of articles telling you that the countertop in your kitchen might be slowly irradiating your family.

Here’s what actually happens when people test it: yes, the slab gives a reading. Granite is a natural material, so that’s expected. But then I encourage the customer to put that same detector on the concrete under their feet. It almost always reads 10 to 100 times higher than the slab did.

Every single time.

That’s not a sales pitch. That’s what the detector says.

So let’s talk about where this scare came from, what the actual science says, and why the answer matters less than people think it does.

Where the Granite Radon Scare Started

This isn’t a new fear.

It goes back roughly two decades to an article called “Granite & Radon” that ran in a trade publication for the surfacing industry. The piece raised alarm about radon emissions from granite countertops. What rarely gets mentioned alongside the original story is who was advertising in that same publication: Corian and Formica, both solid-surface competitors to natural stone.

That doesn’t automatically make the science wrong. But it’s worth knowing the context before you let a twenty-year-old trade article shape a decision about your kitchen. The Natural Stone Institute has pointed to that same advertiser relationship when responding to the claim, and it’s part of the public record if you want to look it up yourself.

Since then, the story has been repeated often enough that a lot of people now treat it as settled fact, without ever checking what the actual research says.

What the EPA Actually Says

The EPA has looked directly at this question, and their position is clear: granite, like other natural stone, can contain trace amounts of naturally occurring radioactive elements such as uranium and thorium. Those elements decay slowly and release small amounts of radon gas over time.

But here’s the part that gets left out of the scary headlines: the EPA states plainly that radon originating in the soil beneath a home is a far more common and far larger health risk than radon from granite building materials. Your countertop isn’t the thing to worry about. The ground your house is built on is.

That tracks exactly with what I see when customers bring detectors into the yard. The slab reads low. The basement or crawlspace, if they’ve tested it, often reads higher. That’s not a coincidence — it’s just geology. You have more rock under your house than you do on top of it.

Why Some Stones Test Higher Than Others

Not all granite is identical, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. Radioactive trace elements vary from stone to stone, and even within different sections of the same slab, because granite is a natural material formed by geological processes, not a manufactured product with a fixed formula.

This is exactly why we’re happy to have a customer test a slab before they buy it. If you have a detector and you want to hold it up to a piece of stone in our yard, do it. We’d rather you walk out confident than walk out wondering.

What About Quartz?

Engineered quartz countertops generally test at or near zero for radon, and that’s a fair point in their favor. Quartz is manufactured, not quarried, so there’s far less natural variation and far less of the trace material that produces radon in the first place. If radon is genuinely the deciding factor for you, that’s worth knowing. We carry both materials and we’ll tell you this straight, the same way we would if you asked us about quartzite vs. quartz for any other reason.

What we’d push back on is the idea that this makes granite or other natural stone unsafe. The actual data, including the EPA’s own position, doesn’t support that conclusion. It supports a difference in degree that, in nearly every real-world case, doesn’t rise to a level anyone needs to worry about.

What I Tell People Who Are Genuinely Concerned

If radon is a real concern for your household — and for some people, given health history or other circumstances, it reasonably is — the right move isn’t to avoid granite. It’s to test your home properly. A whole-home radon test will tell you far more about your actual exposure than worrying about a single countertop ever will. Home radon test kits are inexpensive and widely available, and if your levels come back elevated, that’s a conversation worth having with a radon mitigation professional, regardless of what your countertops are made of.

For the countertop question specifically: bring a detector. Hold it up to the slab. Compare it to what you get from the floor of your basement. Let the data answer the question instead of a twenty-year-old trade article.
