IT STARTED IN A QUARRY IN BRAZIL.
Before RBG was anything, it was just an idea. Kent Johnson had volunteered in South America — land conservation, infrastructure, community work — and stumbled across quarries full of some of the most beautiful stone he'd ever seen. He made some calls, arranged a shipment, and hauled it back to a nearly empty lot in Garden City, Idaho. That was 2007. Nobody said it was going to be easy.
A KID WITH NO JOB AND A LOT TO LEARN.
Brian Pope had just been laid off from an aviation hangar when he heard about a local slab gallery looking for help. He showed up, got to work, and never really stopped. Under Kent's roof he learned everything — sales, forklifts, importing, fabrication, bookkeeping, marketing. The kind of education you don't get in a classroom. The kind you earn with calluses.
MOM MADE IT OFFICIAL.
By 2015, Brian was ready to take the wheel — but buying a business takes more than grit. It takes someone who believes in you. For Brian, that was his mom, Gisele Pope. She brought a designer's eye, a sharp wit, and the kind of care you can't train into people. Together, they took ownership of Rock Bottom Granite and built it into the leading stone supplier in the Treasure Valley. Still family-owned. Still Boise-rooted. Still doing it the right way.
